Dr. Kali Pradip Chaudhuri Speaks @ APPI Convention 2016
Dr. Chaudhuri was an invited guest speaker at the 2016 AAPI (American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin) Convention in New York City, which was held between June 30th and July 4th. Dr. Chaudhuri spoke to the forecasted shortage of American physicians by 2025, and the necessary steps to be taken in order to combat the lack of available doctors.
The root cause of this deficit, according to Dr. Chaudhuri, is due to increasingly competitive residency programs coupled with the strict affirmative action guidelines dictating the acceptance practices of universities and hospitals. Therefore, less than a third of accepted applicants are of Asian descent, despite the increase of qualified candidates coming from these countries.
Dr. Chaudhuri, founder of the KPC Group of companies, has posed his own solution to the problem, announcing his intent to open a “for profit” medical college that would allow students to participate in residency programs at the hospitals and medical centers owned by the KPC Group. This would allow the university to seek out competent students regardless of ethnicity, thereby eliminating many of the barriers that are faced by traditional nonprofit learning institutions.
